José Eduardo Gomes is part of the new generation of Portuguese conductors considered one of the most promising.
A disciple of Jesus Lopez Cobos, he studied at the Haute École de Musique in Geneva (Switzerland) with Laurent Gay. He was the assistant of Peter Eötvös and followed the Masterclasses of Douglas Bostock, Jorma Panula, Kasushi Ono and Peter Rundel...
In 2021, he replaced conductor Trevor Pinnock at short notice for a concert with Maria João Pires and the Gulbenkian Foundation Orchestra, which since then invites him very regularly.
José Eduardo Gomes won the 1st Prize in the European Union Conducting Competition, and the Beethoven Prize in the same competition (2020). These prizes include engagements in Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany and France.
During the 23-24 season, he will notably conduct Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Trilogias das Barcas/J.B. Santos with the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra/Teatro São Carlos as well as Mozart’s Requiem with the Gulbenkian Choir and Orchestra.
JEG is Professor in the Lisbon Music University, as a Principal Conductor of the School Orchestra.
He was Principal Conductor of FEUP Orchestra (Porto), Principal Conductor of Center Classical Orchestra (Coimbra – Portugal), Associate Conductor of the Orquestra Clássica do Sul (Faro – Portugal), Principal Conductor of the Orchestre Chambre de Carouge, in Switzerland and principal conductor of the Circulo Portuense de Opera Choir (Porto-Portugal).
He studies the clarinet in ARTAVE and ESMAE - Porto, where he graduated in Antonio Saiote’s class. José Eduardo is founder of the clarinet ensemble Quarteto Vintage and Serenade Ensemble.
In the past few years he has been invited to work with the main Portuguese Orchestras, such as Gulbenkian Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Cdm, Orquestra SInfónica Portuguesa, with soloist such as Maria João Pires, Diemut Poppen, Maria Elisabeth Lott, Sebastian Klinger, Adriana Ferreira, among others and performing in important festivals, such as Dias da Música, Festival de Sintra, Festival PJM, Festival Cantabile, Festival das Artes, Festival de Música de Leiria, FIMA, Música no Colégio, Festival Internacional de Música Religiosa de Guimarães, among others.
In Opera, he conducted some productions, such as Mozart “Don Giovanni” and “Cosi Fan Tutte”, Marcos de Portugal “La Donna di Genio Volubile”, Haydn “Lo Speziale”and recently Blimunda ( A. Corghi/ Saramago) at the Teatro Nacional São Carlos from Lisbon with a lot of success.
Another important part of his work is dedicated to youth orchestras, all over the country.
Since 2019, José Eduardo is the Artistic Director of JOF (Jovem Orquestra Famalicão), a young symphonic orchestra, with some of the most prominent young Portuguese musicians.
In 2018, he was awarded with the “Medalha de Mérito Cultural”, by his hometown, V.N. Famalicão.

Tanto el coro como la orquesta titulares del vetusto e histórico São Carlos mostraron cualidades y calidades notoriamente superiores a tiempos pretéritos. En absoluto ajeno a ello ha sido la dirección musical, efectiva y cuidadosa, del joven maestro portugués José Eduardo Gomes, que mantuvo el vivo y etéreo pulso acústico de una acción fiel en fondo y forma al cuidado y conciso libreto. Relevante éxito. De los intérpretes y de una ópera que a todas luces merece mayor espacio y presencia en el manido universo operístico contemporáneo. ¡Feliz centenario, querido Yosé Saramago!
